The Classical Music Appreciation Club of Cape Town (CMAC) is a vibrant and growing community of classical music enthusiasts. CMAC caters to both seasoned concert goers as well as those who are entirely new to the industry. We attend concerts together, host our own concert series (CMAC Live), get-togethers and informal concerts (CMAC Connect), and events where the audience can engage with the performers and ask questions.
Our Mission
Our mission is twofold
-
To break down the stiff barriers associated with the classical industry, remove the wall between audience and stage, and make this timeless artform accessible and engaging for the younger generation in Cape Town.
-
To provide a platform for Young musicians in and around Cape Town to perform in large and professional settings, meet new musicians, connect with other like minds, gain performance experience, and to uplift the incredible young talent we have surrounding us. We at CMAC believe that as interest in Classical music dwindles over time amongst the younger population, now is a more important time than ever to focus on giving opportunities to our Youth.
What do we do?
CMAC Connect
CMAC Connect is for budding musicians who wish to perform for peers to gain confidence and experience in a low pressure environment. At Connect, we perform, enjoy an intermission with bring-and-share tea and snacks, we socialise, perform more, then close off with a guided musical discussion. This event takes place at the Erin Hall in Rondebosch every 1 to 2 months. The vision we have for this project is to bridge the gap between musicians and audience, and between students and professionals by providing a platform that is both inclusive and supportive, and promotes exploration, connection and education in music. Hosting CMAC Connect is a major highlight for us, as we get to watch and discover young talent. Many young music lovers do not grow up in the industry and may struggle to meet teachers who are able to nurture them, find opportunities for themselves, or discover what the industry is about. CMAC connect is a platform where all of this can be achieved, while also building up confidence on stage. We hope to use this as an opportunity to invite students from various studios and schools to play in these less formal concerts in the hope that we can select a few to perform with professionals in our CMAC Live concert series. At CMAC Connect, we also try to encourage musicians who followed career paths outside of the music world to continue their pursuit of music and join us on the stage.
CMAC Concert Attendance
Since January 2023, CMAC has garnered and nurtured relationships with the Cape Town Concert Series, Cape Chamber Music Collective, Richard Wagner Society and Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. We see the above-mentioned organisations as being at the forefront of what Cape Town has to offer in classical music and strive to bring awareness to the concerts they host. In many cases we are able to organise discounted tickets for these events, however with funding we would be able to put real effort into advertising and marketing, as well as incentivizing the attendance of these concerts.
CMAC Live
CMAC Live is the name we’ve given our own Concert Series, which launched in June of 2023. We host young upcoming musicians in and around Cape town to perform chamber music in a professional setting, amongst colleagues and peers, long standing audience members and new faces. It is a fantastic opportunity for young musicians to become noticed and start developing their careers on stage as chamber artists and soloists.
In June 2023, we hosted Violinist Rebekah Beelders (UCT graduate and tutti CPO member), Cellist David Pinoit (Professional cellist, former CPO adhoc member) and Pianist Elizabeth Retief (Longstanding Musical educator and owner of the Music HQ) to perform with student musicians Joshua Heugh, Bernadette Goemans and Dirk Nagtegaal, in a soirees where works by Mozart, Schubert, Brahms and Shostakovich were performed.
The launch concert was a major success and in October of 2023 we hosted the second CMAC Live, featuring a young String Quartet of UCT and Bloemfontein Graduates who work as young musicians in Cape Town. Namely: Violinist Nicholas Bruiners, Violinist Daniel Albertyn, Violist Jana Smit and Cellist Ashlin Grobelaar. Another successful and sold out event.
Why should you get involved?
By joining CMAC, you will become part of a diverse community formed to nurture and encourage people like you; people who love music and want to share it. We try to offer various voluntary opportunities to members of CMAC. We do write-ups on concert programmes, keep you up to date on the musical happenings in Cape Town, and occasionally, we offer discounted or complimentary tickets to concerts which we attend as a club. A mission very dear to our heart is to break down the unnecessary boundaries present in the classical music industry which prevents integration with the wider public. We try to create opportunities where you can meet professional musicians at our concert series, CMAC Live, and provide platforms for you to get on stage at our CMAC Connect events. Through this we hope to expand the curiosity and experience of our members.
How do you get involved?
To get involved with CMAC, simply fill out the membership form and join our WhatsApp group, where you will receive notifications for upcoming events both within and outside CMAC. When we have discounted tickets available, we offer them to members by means of the WhatsApp group. However, in order to buy tickets to own events or view important upcoming events through the website or Instagram page, it is not necessary to join the group or club.
